A frame for Marten Looten

I have always been interested in the techniques of the old masters. During the autumn of 2023 i got the oppertunity to join the Rembrandt class held by Ben Valentine. I was very happy that I was able to join this class and take part of the techniques used for making a master copy of a Rembrandt painting. For this particular class we painted Marten Looten, an early painting of Rembrandt.

Since then, I have wanted to frame this wonderful piece. The painting has wonderful texture and a limited light source. I imagined that a copper frame would suit Marten very well. I had previously been experimenting with a vintage frame depicting Midgårdsormen, as you know from Norse mythology, and I thought it might be a fun attempt to merge my scandinavian heritage with a famous Rembrandt painting. of course the frame was to big and I had to adjust it to the height of my Marten Looten. I had also tested two different colours, but preferred the warm reddish over the greenish paint. I had to repaint it and also varnish it.

I added a new layer of metal copper leaf and repainted it. I think the result of the framing suits this handsome merchant well. Welcome to your new frame home, Marten. I think you will like it.

Marten Looten will be exhibited at the LTH art exhibition. Marten is not for sale.

Please check out the painting classes from Ben Valentine, he is truly a master of his craft!
